Thank you, to all instructors who created courses this year. And special thanks to the 4,500 new instructors who submitted their first course in 2016. Great job!
We would like to give a shout out to the following ten breakout instructors of 2016! These brand new instructors showed passion, invested in their students, and took their teaching to another level.
Maximilian began learning programming skills and languages at age 13. He realized finding good resources was very challenging and has always found it important to pass knowledge to other people. He loves being able to create Udemy courses on all kinds of topics, structuring them in the way he would’ve loved to see resources structured when he was learning early on.
Instructor Tip: “Put your student first. Course quality is the most important thing and it all comes down to your students having a great time – and not just great videos.”
Student Quote: “Maximilian makes it easy to bridge the gap between theory and practice. His courses often go beyond what you find in books.”
Jessica Brody is the author of more than 15 books for teens, tweens, and adults including Boys of Summer, 52 Reasons to Hate My Father, A Week of Mondays, The Karma Club, and the three books in the sci-fi Unremembered trilogy—Unremembered, Unforgotten, and Unchanged. Her books have been translated and published in over 23 countries and Unremembered and 52 Reasons to Hate My Father are currently in development as a major motion pictures. She launched her first Udemy course in April of this year and has since created two additional courses to help other young writers improve their craft and write better stories.
Student Quote: “Jessica Brody is a great teacher who gives you tangible, easy to implement tools that are really effective. I’ve already increased my daily word count by 200%. Huge thanks to Jessica!”
Nathan has over 24 years experience in cyber security where he has advised some of largest companies in the world, assuring security on multi-million and multi-billion dollar projects. He began creating courses because he saw a cyber security course market that was poorly represented. He created a course series that he would have wanted, not one that was just the theory of cyber security but the reality.
Instructor Tip: “Students like “practical” parts so make sure you have them! Respond to student questions the same day – But acknowledge this takes time. I make a commitment in my promo video to answer every single question. I get many questions that don’t relate to my course but I still answer them.”
Student Quote: “This is a scarily good course. Scary in terms of all the ways you can be tracked and all the countermeasures to stop it! Very enlightening! Catch me if you can.”
Maxime is an application developer and trainer specializing in web and mobile technologies. He started his career at Apple in Cupertino. Upon returning to France, he and his best friend launched DEV2A, a platform that generates mobile apps for iOS and Android. Maxime has been teaching in regular classrooms for seven years and has always wanted to try online teaching. Udemy allows him to easily distribute his courses and keep track of his students’ questions and progress.
Instructor Inspiration: Before Maxime starting teaching on Udemy, he read all the Udemy instructors success stories, which inspired him to create a course. It also gave him a lot of ideas on how to communicate his topics. Great work instructor community – way to inspire others!
Student Quote: “Excellent course that emphasizes “doing” rather than long theories. Often the explanations arrive after practicing a concept which enables you to understand what problem the concept is solving.”
Australian born, Heidi Willis is an entirely self-taught Natural History watercolor artist. Her work illustrates Australia’s native and exotic plants, flowers, fruits and seed capsules, while her portraits of Australia’s spectacular bird life offers viewers an insight into the world as she experiences it. Painting full-time since 2003, Heidi quickly established herself as one of Australia’s emerging artistic talents. Her reputation as a leading natural history, wildlife and botanical artist is well established and her intricate studies of botany and birds can be found in significant public and private collections around the world. With her work in such demand and her watercolor masterclasses booked out over a year in advance, she has turned her focus to online teaching in order to reach and help more people pursue and achieve their own watercolor goals.
Student Quote: “Heidi is a master of watercolor painting. I love the amount of information she includes and the atmosphere she brings into teaching. I can smell the roses fill the air around, as if I was traveling with her.”
Yuta Fujii, an iOS engineer from Japan teaches on Udemy because it allows him to teach from anywhere and at anytime. He learned programming from scratch and states his life improved tremendously since he started programming. He hopes he can bring the same experience to others. He plans to use his skills and experience to teach underprivileged people who have difficulty accessing high quality education.
Fun Fact: As a university student, he taught an 80 year old gentleman how to create an iPhone app.
Instructor Tip: The Udemy community is very beneficial to learn new techniques for both course creation and course management. He states the best advice for a new Udemy instructor is to “be simple!”

Carlos began his career on YouTube at the age of 13. Now, he is a dedicated Udemy instructor teaching web design and development. Many of his students are very young and just learning to code. As a young learner himself, he experienced first hand the advantages of knowing how to program and build websites. He hopes if his young students keep up the good work they’ll achieve incredible things online. That is why he shares his knowledge with others so they can create amazing websites too.
Instructor Tip: Build an audience before you sell your course on Udemy.
Student Quote: “I love this course, I already had some basic knowledge of PHP, but this is amazing! I’m learning everything I expected and more!”
Laurence is passionate about aerial videography. He loves to share his knowledge and enjoys hearing how his students have benefited from his teaching. Laurence hopes to stay relevant and continue to produce high quality content.
Instructor Tip: “One piece of advice I got was never lose sleep over the competition, only lose sleep over the customer. If you focus on having the best quality content you can create, the rest will take care of itself. But if you keep worrying about your competitors and changing your courses based on them, you will trip up.”
Student Quote: “WOW! Words can’t explain the excitement of seeing one success after the other as you work your way through this course. Laurence, you are to be commended for such a well presented course, thank you for making my hobby just that much more fun.”
Instructor Tip: “Teach in a practical way, I believe this has made the difference for students enrolled in my courses.”
Student Quote: “I’m enjoying the course a lot, the teacher understands the subject well, and explains content in a clear and efficient way.”
Congratulations to all of our Breakout Instructors of 2016, and to everyone who published a course this year!
