New Analytics for Instructor Announcements

Udemy’s announcement feature empowers instructors to communicate directly with students. Announcements are written by instructors and delivered by Udemy directly to student email inboxes. Effective announcements help energize students to explore all the courses you teach on Udemy, and engage students in your course material.

To help you understand the effectiveness of announcements you send to students, we’re happy to announce some exciting new analytics features for the different types of announcements you send to students.

Promotional Announcements

Promotional Announcements, now called “Promotional Emails,” are a way for you to market other Udemy courses you teach, to students in your paid courses.

For new Promotional Emails you send, these new analytics numbers will update in the “Communications” section of your course management page, under the Promotional Emails tab:

  • Created: the date the Promotional Email was created will be posted here
  • Open Rate. This metric tells you the percentage of students who opened the email, out of all who received it
  • Unique CTR. Short for “Click-Through Rate,” out of all those who opened the email, this is the percentage of students who clicked on any of your Udemy course links you included in the announcement.
  • Unsubscribe Rate. This is the percentage of students who received the email that unsubscribed from receiving these types of emails from you going forward.

Educational Announcements

Educational Announcements, now known simply as “Announcements,” are a way for you to give your students updates about a course you teach, share resources related to your course topic, and “re-activate” student interest in your course. We’ve seen inspiring, effective Announcements boost engagement among students by as much as 86%, overnight!

For new Announcements you send, these analytics will begin to update in the “Communications” section of your course management page, under the Announcements tab:

  • Open Rate. This metric tells you the percentage of students who opened the email, out of all who received it
  • Unique Views. Since these Announcements are posted in the “Announcements” section in the course itself, this counts the number of unique students who viewed the Announcement within the course taking experience.
  • Unsubscribe Rate. This is the percentage of students who received the email that unsubscribed from receiving these types of emails from you going forward.

Optimizing Your Promotional Emails and Announcements

To help put these numbers into context, we will provide industry benchmarks for “Open” and “Click-Through” rates for successful Promotional Emails and Announcements from Udemy instructors.

Once you start seeing how your own Promotional Emails and Announcements compare to these benchmarks, we hope you’ll take advantage of this guide for crafting effective messages to students:

For example, if you notice that your open rate is low, a more relevant call to action in the Announcement subject line could help boost the number of students who click to open your message.

If you see a low click-through rate for your Promotional Emails, you might consider featuring real student feedback for the courses you’re advertising, to give your audience a better idea of the positive effect your new courses have already had on students.

We hope you’ll take this opportunity to evaluate the effectiveness of the Promotional Emails and Announcements you send, and optimize these messages to keep students excited about the courses you teach. As always, our Support Team is standing by to answer any questions you may have.
