Announcing Student Satisfaction Analytics

Here at Udemy, we’re constantly learning. One of the main ways we do this is through data — in fact, across every different Udemy department within the company, we’re all nerds for data. We’re obsessed with harvesting the power of the data from the marketplace to make students happy and instructors successful. Plus, we’re always on the hunt for ways that we can open up that power for you, to help you on your own data-driven journey to excellence.

Today, we’re excited to announce the release of Student Satisfaction Analytics — a powerful tool to understand how your course is performing in the marketplace, and how satisfied your students are with your course.

Your course is a living, breathing, and (now!) improving experience. This new feature is all about giving you the right data to keep your course vibrant, healthy, and optimized.

Let’s jump right in.

Why is Student Satisfaction so important? Satisfied students are happy students and happy students are hungry students. Satisfied, successful students consume more content, become powerful word-of-mouth evangelists for you, and go on to purchase your new courses.

How can you determine Student Satisfaction in your courses? With data (from student behavior and feedback)! Think of this data as a roadmap — accelerate what’s working and iterate on what isn’t.

What are your next steps? Over the past month we’ve conducted an extensive beta test with members of our Instructor Council. These instructors have been busy using their analytics to learn about their courses and optimize for student satisfaction. Check out their case studies (Phil Ebiner and Steve Churchill) and use them to take action in your own course.

Using the data in your Student Satisfaction Analytics, we’ve mapped out a framework for determining the likelihood of a student repurchasing your next Udemy course. We call it the Student Satisfaction Journey —  discovering your first course to repurchasing your subsequent courses. Your Student Satisfaction Analytics tell you where your students are on their journey, and how you can push them towards repurchase. Here’s how.

Your Student Satisfaction Journey:
5 Steps to Student Success

Discover. Make sure your course is reaching the right student by clearly defining your ideal student and target audience, your course summary and learning objectives and your intro video. This ideal student should inform every aspect of your course – get specific!

Activate. Get your students learning. Use the Lecture Engagement section of your Analytics to see the percentage of students who have started and finished each lecture, and how that compares to the total number of active students in your course. Send welcome messages, educational announcements, and make course updates to raise those percentages.Screen Shot 2015-03-18 at 4.07.04 PM

Engage. Engaged students are satisfied students. Use your Content Consumed metric to see how your average  consumption stacks up against your subcategory. Make updates to the introduction lecture of your course to set the right tone for students as they start their learning journey.

Achieve. You achieve success when your students feel that they have been successful. Your Student Feedback gives you pinpointed information on what is working for your students and what needs some more attention.  Use the included support articles to help you self-diagnose your course and make the relevant updates.
