Exciting Updates to our Terms and Conditions for Japan-Based Instructors

As you’re likely aware, our Instructor Terms and Conditions include slightly different terms for our Japan-based instructors than our instructors in other parts of the world. Today, Japan-based instructors take home 33% of the net amount (after taxes and transaction fees) of many of their course sales.

Our success in Japan has allowed us to simplify these terms and make them consistent for all instructors. This means that our Japan-based instructors will now earn a 50% revenue share on “Udemy Organic” sales instead of the current 33% revenue share.

Sales made via “Instructor Promotion” using an “Instructor Coupon” will continue to earn a revenue share of 96%, and revenue that comes from our “Marketing Boost” program will continue to vary, in most cases earning a 25% revenue share.

While every instructor has a different percentage of their revenue coming from “Udemy Organic”, we’ve determined that instructors could take home as much as 27% more revenue because of this simplification of our terms!

For example, a typical Japanese instructor’s revenue is broken out by:

• “Udemy Organic” – 60%
• “Marketing Boost” – 30%
  • “Affiliates” – 20%
  • “Ads” – 10%
• “Instructor Promotion” – 10%

If an instructor’s courses earned JP¥100000 in net revenue (after taxes and transaction fees) in a month, he would take home JP¥36900 with the old revenue split:

• “Udemy Organic” – JP¥100000*60%*33% = JP¥19800
• “Marketing Boost” – JP¥100000*30%*25% = JP¥7500
  • “Affiliate” – JP¥100000*20%*25% = JP¥5000
  • “Ads” – JP¥100000*10%*25% = JP¥2500
• “Instructor Promotion” – JP¥100000*10%*96% = JP¥9600
• Total = JP¥36900

If the same instructor’s courses earned JP¥100000 in net revenue (after taxes and transaction fees) in a month, he would take home JP¥47100 or 27% more with the new revenue split:

• “Udemy Organic” – JP¥100000*60%*50% = JP¥30000
• “Market Boost” – JP¥100000*30%*25% = JP¥7500
  • “Affiliate” – JP¥100000*20%*25% = JP¥5000
  • “Ads” – JP¥100000*10%*25% = JP¥2500
• “Instructor Promotion” – JP¥100000*10%*96% = JP¥9600
• Total = JP¥47100
