Udemy Announces New Funding

When we began in 2010, the mission of helping anyone learning anything seemed distant. Now, it’s something within our reach that we make progress toward every single day on Udemy.

Today, we’re proud to announce a new round of funding that will fuel the next leg of sustainable growth for Udemy’s global education marketplace. We want to take this opportunity to share some of the exciting growth opportunities ahead, but much more importantly, to thank you for your role in making this all possible.

Just think of all you’ve accomplished. You’ve taught 7 million students in more than 190 countries valuable skills. You’ve provided support to help other experts also become instructors, building a thriving community of more than 16,000 instructors teaching in over 80 different languages.

And something tells us you’re just getting started.

We believe that everyone has limitless potential to learn and that nothing should get in the way of those aspirations, whether professional or personal. By empowering experts like you to teach absolutely anything, we empower students to advance their careers, change professions, or simply learn something new. That’s exciting, inspiring work, and your drive and dedication make it possible.

This new funding will allow Udemy to continue to invest heavily in accelerating your success. At its core, the next chapter will focus on supporting the people, product, and platform necessary to make Udemy the best place for you to teach and for your students to learn.

Specifically, Udemy instructors will feel more investment in several key areas:

  • Accelerate — The number of Udemy students has more than doubled in the past year, with strong growth in both the consumer and enterprise (Udemy for Business) segments. Going forward, we’ll continue to grow our student base to boost your revenue, reach, and impact.
  • Expand — While 50% of Udemy’s revenues come from outside the U.S. today, we’ll continue our active expansion into new international markets. Spanish, German, Japanese and Portuguese markets are off to a fast start, but that’s only the tip of the global iceberg.
  • Innovate — Online learning is still in its infancy, which means we have an opportunity to define the science of what it means to teach and learn anything online. We’ll focus our product investments on new tools to facilitate instructor success and student learning.
  • Improve — Our small, scrappy team has grown over the last year and will expand in key areas such as Customer Support, Marketing, Marketplace Trust & Safety, and Engineering in order to constantly improve our platform. We live our Never Stop Learning mantra, and we’ll continue to look to your voice to help us grow.

We’re humbled and excited by everything that we’ve achieved together in such a short time and truly believe that the future is limitless. If you have thoughts you’d like to share with us, we’re always happy to hear from you (drop us a line at instructors@udemy.com).
